Copenhagen tourist traps: what to skip, and where to go instead

Copenhagen doesn't have many outright scams, it has traps built from crowds and timing: the right place at the wrong hour, or a format sold to tour groups. Below are 7, each with the reason it doesn't earn its reputation and a specific place to go instead. Sourced from local writers and, where marked, our own visit.

01

Eating at the canal-side restaurants in Nyhavn at midday or late afternoon

Wall-to-wall crowds, tourist prices, English-only menus. One local writer describes it as the place Copenhageners avoid the way they'd avoid Leicester Square in London.

Go here instead

Christianshavn · Overgaden Neden Vandet, Christianshavn. The same colored houses on the water you came to Nyhavn for, without the crowd.

02

Setting aside time to shop on Strøget

A street full of the chain stores you already have at home, a Starbucks, and expensive Irish pubs.

Go here instead

Skip the chains and spend that hour in Nørrebro instead, Jægersborggade and the streets around it, where the independent and vintage shops actually are.

03

Visiting the Little Mermaid in the middle of the day

It's the most photographed statue in Denmark, which means coach-tour crowds all day. And the statue itself is small and surprisingly plain.

Go here instead

Wandering around Kastellet, Indre By (harbourfront). A quiet 17th-century fortress, free to walk through. The windmill and the moat do the work.

04

Trying to watch the changing of the guard at Amalienborg at midday

Big crowd, blocked sightlines. It's shorter and more cramped than you're expecting.

05

Booking a multilingual narrated canal tour from one of the big bus or boat companies

Crowded, fixed route, not your pace.

GoBoat self-sail. Your own boat, your own route, your own music. goboat.dk

06

Going to Reffen on a summer weekend at lunch or late afternoon

On hot summer weekends the food queues hit 45-60 minutes and finding a seat gets hard.

Go here instead

La Banchina (dinner menu), Refshaleøen (full details are in the guide).

07

Wallmans Copenhagen (Cirkusbygningen / the Circus Building). The dinner + show + nightclub package

A TikTok creator rated it 10/10, but this is the classic tourist-trap format: a fixed 4-course menu, a choreographed show, 525-729+ DKK per person (~€70-98) as a set package price, service charge on top. It's exactly the kind of thing this guide filters out. Dinner-and-a-show, large tour groups, sold through coach tours. Reviews of the food are mixed ('tasty but ordinary'); what you're really buying is the production.

Dinner at Barr then live jazz at La Fontaine. The same big-night-out feeling, without the tour package, in real rooms

This is 7 things to avoid. The guide is where to actually go.
